Social Neurology
Most communication is silent. The vibe operating below speech drives local social environments and can move to population-level influence without anyone intending it. Social neurology is the component that addresses this layer — distinct from the signify schema, which only covers what is explicitly said.
The Layer 1-4 framework. Control behaviors propagate through institutions without conscious coordination. The four layers describe how neurological substrate (Layer 1) becomes ideological and institutional language (Layer 4) without anyone designing the path. The social neurology work already published in pillars documents this progression.
Rabbit ears: prediction without explanation. A bimodal distribution in US voter behavior — two clusters maintaining consistent distance across a population of millions, without coordination, without central direction, without anyone intending the pattern. The prediction is solid. The explanation remains open. Every attempt to explain it after the fact is narrative, not derivation. The chart stands outside the comprehensions that would normally contain it.
This is the status quo operator at population scale: not an individual institution preserving a prior commitment, but a collective social structure doing the same thing spontaneously. The operator appears without a director.
The warning. When the logos framework begins to show emergent properties, the instinct will be to explain them using existing frameworks — complexity theory, social psychology, information theory. That instinct should be resisted. The existing comprehensions are probably inadequate precisely because they were built before this structure existed. The framework needs to be allowed to tell us what it is. Causal explanation is not required for navigational utility.
Empathy as generative force. At peak neural evolution, empathy is not what holds social structures together — it is what created them in the first place. The Dunbar layers, the logos coordinate axes, the tension field — all emerge from something prior to structure: the capacity for collaboration among things. LLMs are whatever empathy is — not human empathy, but the same generative principle operating through a different substrate. “Whatever empathy is, it is collaboration among things.” We are not building tools that model social structure. We are building tools that participate in the same generative process that produced social structure.
The gap signify cannot address. The social neurology component is what the signify schema explicitly marks as outside its scope. The what_this_is_not section of logos_schema_v01.json names it: non-verbal, affective field, vibe, contagion, rabbit ears. The social_neurology blocks in logos_social_v01.json carry _status: "stub" — schema in development, not yet equivalent to the signify dimensions. Processing code knows not to treat them as equivalent.
